Australian Army Chief in India: Defence ties growing
India and Australia have been building strong defence ties for years now. They have their big joint army exercise called AUSTRAHIND, which first started in 2016. This drill focuses on counter-terrorism, close combat, and tactical teamwork. The next one will happen in Australia in November 2025.
Eaxh year both armies also have staff talks to match their training styles and improve capabilities. They also do things like exchange young officers, send instructors to each other’s training schools, and join each other’s professional courses. This has helped both sides work together smoothly during operations. Disaster relief has also been part of these exchanges, like during the Indo-Pacific Endeavour in 2022, when they shared their experiences in jungle fighting, disaster response, and counterterrorism.
The Quad partnership, which includes India, Australia, Japan, and the US, started a joint humanitarian relief plan in 2022 in Tokyo. The Indian Army has done relief work in countries like Nepal, Fiji, and Mozambique, apart from helping in disasters inside India. The Australian Army has helped in many Pacific islands.

Future plans
Darwin in northern Australia is already an important base for multinational operations. It has strong logistics and communication systems and is used by the US Marines and for joint drills. Experts believe Darwin could link with India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands to form a quick response network covering Southeast Asia, the eastern Indian Ocean, and the Pacific.
The Centre for Land Warfare Studies in Delhi has been working with Australian experts to study and plan modern warfare. During this visit, a new agreement is expected to be signed to share ideas on land warfare, counter-terrorism, and planning for different scenarios. It will also open the door for more participation in events like the Chanakya Defence Dialogue.
India has already given Australia defence equipment like surveillance systems, protected vehicles, and other military gear. Talks are going on between India’s Army Design Bureau and Australia’s Digger Works to make cost-friendly and tough equipment that can work in the Indo-Pacific’s difficult conditions, especially for humanitarian missions.
During the trip Lieutenant General Stuart will attend high-level briefings and visit field areas to see training and cooperation work in action. The talks will also cover regional security issues and how both armies can work more closely in the Quad framework.
