Ajit Doval in Moscow: National Security Adviser Ajit Doval reached Moscow this week for an important visit where he will work on making India’s defence and energy partnership with Russia even stronger. This visit comes at a time when the United States is not happy with India buying oil from Russia. US President Donald Trump recently gave a warning to India and even said that extra tariffs could be added if India keeps buying oil from Russia. Trump also spoke about India staying neutral in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, which the US doesn’t like, reported BT.
Even though the US is complaining, India continues to focus on its own national interest. The trip to Moscow was already planned earlier and is mainly about strengthening defence cooperation between India and Russia. A report by TASS shared that the two countries will talk about many issues including the tense global situation and oil supplies from Russia to India.
While in Moscow, Doval is likely to hold talks about military cooperation, including the possible purchase of more S-400 missile systems. India may also explore ideas like setting up repair and maintenance centres in India and may even discuss the option of getting Russia’s advanced Su-57 fighter jets.
US Criticises Russian Oil Trade
India has made it clear that it will not stop its trade with Russia just because other countries are unhappy. The Ministry of External Affairs shared that India’s relationship with Russia is based on trust and understanding, and others should not interfere in it. In fact, the ministry said that countries like the US and those in the EU had themselves traded with Russia before, to keep the global energy markets stable, and many still do it today.
President Trump earlier said strong words against India for continuing oil trade with Russia, but at the same time, the US is still buying Russian uranium, which many pointed out as double standards. Indian politicians and experts also reminded Trump that during the 1971 war, the US had helped Pakistan and even sent warships, but India still won that war. So, India will continue doing what is right for its people.
Russia Visit This Month
Soon after Doval’s visit, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will also travel to Russia on August 27 and 28. His visit will focus on talks about defence, trade, and energy. He will meet Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to discuss both country-to-country and international matters. He will also sit down with Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Yury Borisov as both sides will lead the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Technical and Economic Cooperation.
