Fourth S-400 Coming In May, India Boosts Air Defence Strength

India will receive its fourth S-400 in May 2026, strengthening western border defence. With layered systems working together, the country is moving closer to building a very strong and hard-to-break air shield.

India’s S-400 vs Russia’s S-500

Fourth S-400 in India: India is getting close to adding its fourth S-400 Triumf squadron, and reports say the unit is expected around May 2026. India signed the deal for five S-400 systems in 2018, and Reuters reported in March 2026 that the government also cleared more S-400 purchases as part of a wider military upgrade after the Pakistan conflict. In simple words, this means the Indian Air Force is building a much thicker air defence wall on the western side.

Why Punjab and Rajasthan are Improtant Here?

The western border is a big, open stretch of land. That is why Punjab and Rajasthan are seen as important zones. On flat ground, drones, missiles, and other flying threats can move with less trouble than in mountain areas. The new S-400 squadron is meant to reduce those “blind spots” and give India more time to see danger early and react faster. Rosoboronexport says the S-400 is built to detect and track aerodynamic and ballistic targets, and it has long reach and strong mobility.

The system is not being used alone. India is also building a layered air defence setup with Russian, Israeli, and Indian systems working together. The article’s “crown jewel” is the S-400, but below it sits Project Kusha, which DRDO describes as an indigenous long-range air defence system with a 350 km range under development. DRDO has said it is expected to be deployed in about four to five years, and official releases also describe Akashteer as India’s fully indigenous automated Air Defence Control and Reporting System.

What Operation Sindoor changed?

The timing also matters because the delivery is linked with the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor. Reuters reported that India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, 2025, and later said the S-400 was used during the May fighting with Pakistan. In August 2025, India’s air force chief said Indian S-400 systems shot down most of the Pakistani aircraft it claimed were hit, although Pakistan denied losing aircraft. That is why the system is now seen as more than just equipment.

With the fourth squadron on the way, India is moving closer to the five-squadron plan it originally signed up for. The goal is not one magic shield. It is a network. The S-400 handles the long range layer, Project Kusha is meant to fill a future gap, and systems like Akashteer help tie everything together into one fast picture.
