DRDL 4.5 Wind Tunnel: The Defence Research and Development Laboratory or DRDL, in Hyderabad is preparing to build a new trisonic wind tunnel that can test air flow from Mach 0.2 to Mach 4.5. Public reports say it will be a blow-down type facility and it will have a 1.6 m × 1.6 m test section. This means engineers will be able to test larger model versions of missiles, rockets, aircraft, and other aerospace vehicles in one place. The main idea is to help India build more of its own defence and space technology at home and to cut down the need to use foreign test centres.

What is the use fo this Tunnel?
A wind tunnel is like a strong air-testing machine. It helps scientists see how air moves around a model before the real machine ever flies. DRDL’s new tunnel will cover three speed zones. It will work in subsonic speed, transonic speed, and supersonic speed. In simple words, that means it can study how a missile or aircraft behaves at slow, medium, and very fast speeds. That is useful because air acts very differently as speed changes.
Wind tunnel testing helps engineers understand how a missile or aircraft will perform before it is flown. It also helps improve the design and reduces the chances of problems during real flight tests.
It helps engineers to:
- Measure lift and drag.
- Check how control surfaces work.
- Study the overall aerodynamic design.
- Compare real test results with computer simulations (CFD).
- Find design problems early.
- Save time and reduce development costs before flight testing begins.
What India Already Has?
India already has some strong wind tunnel facilities. In 2020, DRDO inaugurated a hypersonic wind tunnel in Hyderabad that can simulate speeds from Mach 5 to Mach 12. The official release said India became the third country after the USA and Russia to have such a large facility of that kind. ISRO also has its own trisonic wind tunnel at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, where the first blow-down test was held in December 2022, and the facility was later inaugurated in 2024. DRDL’s new tunnel will add another important layer by filling the Mach 0.2 to Mach 4.5 range.
