Who is Dr Mayank Sharma: India’s New Controller General of Defence Accounts

Dr Mayank Sharma, a 1989-batch officer of the Indian Defence Accounts Service (IDAS), has been appointed as the Controller General of Defence Accounts (CGDA) in India.

India Controller General of Defence Accounts: Dr Mayank Sharma officially became the Controller General of Defence Accounts (CGDA) on Saturday. With over 30 years of experience in the government, Dr Sharma is a 1989-batch officer of the Indian Defence Accounts Service (IDAS). He has held many important roles in his career, including positions in the Defence Accounts Department.

Before taking on the role of CGDA, Dr Sharma worked in the cabinet secretariat and represented India as the Alternate Permanent Representative at the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). He also worked with the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice and the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law. Additionally, he represented India at the International Anti-Corruption Academy and the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna.

During his time as the Head of the Consular Division at the Indian Embassy in Vienna, Dr Sharma managed all consular affairs and handled high-level Indian delegations at UNODC.

The CGDA is responsible for leading the Defence Accounts Department (DAD), which handles the financial matters of the Indian Armed Forces and other defence-related organisations.

The DAD is one of the oldest departments in the Indian government, with its roots going back to the military paymasters of the East India Company. The first paymaster was appointed in 1750.

Dr Sharma’s appointment marks a new chapter in the leadership of this historic department, which plays a crucial role in managing the finances of India’s defence forces.
