S-400 Sudarshan: Late at night between May 7 and 8, India stopped a big attack by Pakistan. Pakistani drones and missiles were coming toward 15 cities in India, but the Indian Air Force used its powerful S-400 Sudarshan Chakra missile system to bring them down. The attack was aimed at hurting India’s military areas, but India stopped it just in time. Defence experts told news agency ANI that India fired the S-400 missiles and destroyed all the incoming targets successfully.
India’s special air defence system and the Integrated Counter-UAS Grid worked together and made sure nothing was damaged. Officials said they found broken parts of the Pakistani drones and missiles in many places, which proved the attack really happened.

S-400 Sudarshan
This system was bought from Russia’s Almaz-Antey in 2018 for around ₹35,000 crore. It is one of the best in the world and can watch the skies in all directions using special radars. The S-400 can find targets that are up to 600 km away and hit them even from 400 km, reported TOI.
It can also shoot down many different kinds of flying objects like drones, planes, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles. This system uses mobile launchers, so it can move quickly to different places when needed. It also has smart radars that can follow more than 100 targets at the same time.
Because of this system, India’s air defence is now much stronger. The S-400 adds more power to the other defence systems India already has like the Akash, MR-SAM, and the Israeli Spyder.
Each unit of Sudarshan Chakra has two parts called batteries. According to The Logical Indian, each battery has six launchers and can fire up to 128 missiles. These missiles are made to stop many kinds of threats, like drones, cruise missiles, stealth planes, and even big ballistic missiles. Defence officers said this system was very helpful in stopping Pakistan’s drone and missile attack. It protected important military places in India.
The Defence Ministry also shared pictures of broken pieces of missiles found in different areas. These pictures show how well Sudarshan Chakra worked to protect India during this serious attack.
The Indian government called this system a “game-changer” for South Asia’s skies, and many experts agree. Right now, India has four S-400 units. One of them is in Pathankot, keeping an eye on Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab. Another one protects important areas in Rajasthan and Gujarat.

India’s Response
During a press talk on May 7, the Indian government said its response to the terror attack in Pahalgam was “focused, measured, and non-escalatory.” They said they did not target any Pakistani military buildings. But after Pakistan’s attack on May 8, India replied in a strong way. It hit back by destroying one of Pakistan’s air defence systems in Lahore. This answer was meant to show strength but not make things worse unless Pakistan continues.
Former Vice Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Shirish Baban Deo (Retd), told ANI, “It is a very capable system—perhaps the most potent in the world. It’s not just one missile but a mix of three different types, each optimised for specific threats. It also features three to four kinds of radars.”
On May 8, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said, “Yesterday, Pakistan launched a targeted attack on the Sikh community in J&K—hitting a gurdwara in Poonch and injuring Sikh community members. Three individuals were killed. In total, 16 civilians have died in Poonch and several others have been injured.”
“If there is a further attempt at escalation by Pakistan, it will be responded to in an appropriate domain. The choice now lies entirely with Pakistan,” he added.
