2025 Year of Defence: India has declared 2025 as the “Year of Defence Reforms” to bring significant changes to its military and strengthen national security. The focus of these reforms is to create integrated theatre commands, simplify military procurement processes, and use advanced technologies to modernize the armed forces.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said these reforms aim to ensure “unprecedented advancements in defence preparedness” and protect India against 21st-century challenges.
The introduction of integrated theatre commands is a major step in this plan. These commands will combine the Army, Navy, and Air Force to work as a single unit in specific geographical regions.

This new system will replace the current structure where each service operates separately. By doing so, the government hopes to better use resources and improve cooperation between the three forces.
The reforms also focus on new areas like cyber and space security, as well as technologies like artificial intelligence, robotics, and hypersonic systems.
This will help the military prepare for modern, multi-dimensional warfare. Singh called this effort a “momentous step in the modernization journey of the armed forces.”
Another important goal is to make the process of buying defence equipment faster and easier. The government wants to promote partnerships between public and private sectors and improve the transfer of technology between the defence industry and civilian companies. Efforts will also be made to boost India’s role as a global exporter of defence products.
According to NDTV, the ministry emphasized the need for better collaboration between different stakeholders in the defence sector. It plans to break down silos, share knowledge, and encourage joint training and operations between the services.
The meeting chaired by Singh also highlighted the importance of caring for veterans, improving welfare programs, and using their expertise for the benefit of the armed forces.
