US AWACS Hit in Iran Strike: A major US Air Force plane called the E-3 Sentry was damaged during an Iranian missile and drone attack on Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia on Friday, March 27. Current reporting says 12 American service members were hurt in the strike, and two of them were seriously injured. Reports also say some US refuelling planes at the base were damaged too. The E-3 damage has drawn special attention because this is one of the most important aircraft the US uses to watch the sky and guide air missions.
Images shared on social media and reviewed by news outlets appear to show heavy damage to one E-3 aircraft at Prince Sultan Air Base. Reporting also says flight-tracking information showed as many as six E-3 Sentry planes were at the base before the attack.

Why This Plane is Important
The E-3 Sentry is not just another military aircraft. It works like a flying control room. The US Air Force says the plane gives commanders a real-time view of the battlefield and helps with surveillance, target tracking, command, control, and battle management. In simple words, it helps the military see what is happening in the air and make quick decisions.
This plane has been part of US air operations since the 1970s. Over the years, AWACS aircraft like the E-3 have been used in big conflicts including Desert Storm, Kosovo, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Operation Inherent Resolve against the Islamic State. The aircraft was developed in the United States and was later used by other partners too, including France, the UK, and Saudi Arabia. It became one of the best known AWACS platforms in the world because it can scan huge areas, track aircraft and threats, and help manage fast-moving battles.
That is why experts say this loss is serious. Heather Penney, a former F-16 pilot and analyst at the Mitchell Institute, called it “incredibly problematic.” Kelly Grieco of the Stimson Center said it is “a significant loss in the short term.” Penney also described the AWACS job as being like a “chessmaster” over the battlefield.
What was Iran Trying to do?
Prince Sultan Air Base is one of the most important US military sites in the region, so analysts do not see this strike as random. The base supports operations tied to the wider conflict with Iran, which makes it a very valuable target. Experts say the attack may be part of an “asymmetric counter air campaign,” meaning Iran may be trying to weaken the support systems behind US airpower instead of only going after front-line fighter jets.
That kind of strategy would focus on things like radar, communications systems, refuelling aircraft, and high-value command planes such as the E-3. If those systems get damaged, the US can still fly missions, but it gets harder to watch the full battlespace, guide aircraft, and react fast. In a tense and crowded region, even one damaged AWACS plane can create real gaps.

Old Fleet and New Pressure
The strike has also brought back a bigger question about the future of US airborne battle management. The E-3 fleet is old. Current reporting says only about 16 US E-3 aircraft remain in service, down from more than 30 in earlier years. Production ended long ago, and the remaining planes already face maintenance pressure.
The planned replacement is the Boeing E-7 Wedgetail, but that change is still not finished. Some Pentagon leaders have also shown interest in space-based systems, though experts warn those systems are not ready to fully replace aircraft like the E-3 yet. That is why Penney argued that delaying replacement is risky. As she put it, “The strain that the loss of this E-3 will impose… underscores the need to accelerate the procurement and delivery of the E-7,” adding that the shortfall comes after many years of weak investment in battle management aircraft.
