Labour Party on Armed Forces: As the nation gets ready to commemorate 80 years since the D-Day landings that changed the Second World War, Labour leader Keir Starmer is expected to announce today that new legislation for Armed Forces communities will recognize Britain’s profound gratitude to veterans, armed forces personnel, and their families.

To enhance daily living for military people and their families, an independent Commissioner for the Armed Forces will be appointed.

The first King’s Speech will include legislation addressing this. Additionally, new legislation would completely enact the Armed Forces Covenant, bolstering the rights of service members, veterans, and their families.

According to UK Defence Journal, In the week that Labour committed to the Nuclear Deterrent Triple Lock, a Strategic Defence Review, and allocating 2.5% of GDP to defense as soon as possible, Starmer is expected to declare, “I have changed the Labour Party to put it back into the service of working people – and the ultimate service is that given by our veterans and armed forces personnel.”

The new policy that Labour is announcing today, according to the party, consist of:

  • Legislation establishing an Armed Forces Commissioner in the first King’s Speech would hold the government responsible by providing an impartial advocate for serving military personnel and their families.
  • New Armed Forces Covenant: By completely enacting the Armed Forces Covenant into law, we can guarantee that all individuals who are serving or have served in the armed forces, as well as their families, get fair and respectful treatment.

According to Labor, these new legislation represent just the beginning of their plan to enhance the quality of life for veterans, serving members, and their families. To create the final legislation, they also intend to collaborate closely with groups that support veterans and service.

“The ultimate service is that of our armed forces personnel and veterans. Britain owes a huge debt of gratitude for all they have given our country. My changed Labour Party, once again a party of service, will repay that commitment with a new package of support for veterans, service personnel and their families. We will establish a new Armed Forces Commissioner and enshrine a new Armed Forces Covenant fully into law.”

“Like so many people across Britain, Labour has deep respect for the serving men and women of our Armed Forces. Theirs is the ultimate public service.”

“Labour’s new laws will improve everyday life for those who serve and the families who support them. They will begin to right the wrongs for everyday Forces life with a new independent champion, a legal guarantee of fair treatment and ensuring our veterans are properly respected.”
