Italian Defence Minister Says Elon Musk’s Starlink Evaluation Should Stay Technical

Guido Crosetto, the Defence Minister of Italy, has emphasized the importance of technical evaluations over political considerations when collaborating with Elon Musk’s Starlink.

Elon Musk’s Starlink

Elon Musk’s Starlink: Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto said that any decision on working with Elon Musk’s Starlink company should be based only on technical reasons, not politics. He explained that his ministry is only responsible for giving a technical opinion on the satellite communication system.

“In theory, the only evaluation we should give to the Starlink system … should be purely technical,” Crosetto told Reuters.

He also said, “I believe we need to distinguish political aspects from technical ones, as we cannot base our reasoning solely on sympathy, antipathy, or temporary political ties to people like the world’s major tycoons.”

Some political parties in Italy have raised concerns about working with Starlink, especially because Elon Musk is close to U.S. President Donald Trump. They worry about giving a national security project to a foreign businessman.

Reuters reported that Eutelsat, a European satellite company, is also being considered for the same deal. The League party, which is part of the government, supports choosing Starlink. They believe its technology is more advanced.
