USS Zumwalt: HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division has successfully undocked the USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000), the lead ship of the U.S. Navy’s Zumwalt-class of guided missile destroyers, bringing it closer to testing and returning to the Navy fleet.

HII President and CEO Chris Kastner expressed pride in supporting the Navy’s efforts to integrate advanced capabilities, including the Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) weapon system, into the Zumwalt.

The undocking follows significant modernization work at Ingalls shipyard, which began when the ship arrived in Pascagoula in August 2023.

During this time, the ship was moved onto land for technology upgrades, including the integration of CPS and the replacement of its original twin 155mm Advanced Gun Systems with new missile tubes. These updates are intended to enhance the ship’s hypersonic strike capabilities.

“In partnership with the Navy we are steadfast in our commitment to complete this complex work that adds significant hypersonic capability to Zumwalt,” HII President and CEO Chris Kastner said according to naval news. “We are proud to support the incorporation of the conventional prompt strike for the Navy.”

Zumwalt-class destroyers are equipped with cutting-edge technology, including a state-of-the-art electric propulsion system, a wave-piercing tumblehome hull, and a stealth design.

As per Globenewswire, these ships are also outfitted with the most advanced warfighting technology and weaponry, making them capable of performing a wide range of missions such as deterrence, power projection, sea control, and command and control. The Zumwalt-class ships are designed to evolve with new systems and missions, helping the Navy stay at the forefront of modern warfare.
