Cyberattack on Russian defence ministry claimed by Ukraine

Ukraine announced Tuesday that it had carried out a successful cyber attack that temporarily disrupted the communications of the Russian military’s defense ministry.

“As a result of the cyberattack, the exchange of information between the units of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation, which used the indicated server located in Moscow, was stopped,” Ukraine’s GUR military intelligence unit said in a statement.

It added that the cyberattack was “ongoing”.

AFP was not able to verify the claim, and Russian officials had not yet responded to the alleged hacking.

Nonetheless, Russian authorities announced Tuesday that a “technical problem” had caused several internet sites in the country to go down, though no mention was made of the defence ministry.

According to the Russian digital development ministry, the problem was related to “Domain Name System Security Extensions” and had been resolved by Tuesday evening, though “disruptions” could persist for a while.
