Canada C5ISRT Defence: Calian Group Ltd., a Canadian company that works in defence, space, healthcare and other important areas, has announced a new plan to help Canada protect itself better. The company says the world is becoming more dangerous and Canada must be ready, especially in the Arctic. Because of this, Calian wants to speed up how Canada builds and uses its own defence technology. This work will be done through Calian VENTURES which helps bring new defence ideas to life inside Canada.

Canada is now placing more focus on having its own defence systems and not depending too much on other countries. Calian plans to support this goal by helping Canadian companies work together and by bringing in funding. The money will come from different places. This includes investment from VENTURES, new technology created with Canadian small and mid-size businesses, support from regional investment groups, and help from federal government programs.
New Defence Labs Across the Country
The first big step in this plan is to create a network of defence labs across Canada. These labs will stretch from coast to coast to coast. Their job will be to test new defence technology, make sure it works, and help it grow faster. The labs will bring together small companies, the Canadian Armed Forces, NATO partners, government teams, universities and big defence companies.
By sharing tools, experts and systems, Calian says these labs will help Canada move faster toward its defence goals. This includes protecting the Arctic, improving national security, and updating the Canadian Armed Forces.
Patrick Houston, Chief Executive Officer of Calian, explained why this matters. He said, “Canada is facing a fundamentally different security environment and meeting the moment requires sustained investment, trusted partners and long-term commitment,” and added, “This investment reflects Calian’s confidence in Canada’s defence future and our responsibility as a Canadian company to help strengthen Canadian sovereignty as well as help build the Canadian defence industrial base.”
What does C5ISRT means for Canada?
A key part of this plan is something called C5ISRT. This stands for Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance and Targeting. It is the modern system armies need to fight and defend properly today. Unlike older systems, C5ISRT includes cyber and targeting from the start.

Chris Pogue, President of Defence and Space at Calian, said, “C5ISRT is not a future concept. It is an operational requirement of today’s battlefield and for Canada to own a truly sovereign capability,” and also said, “Mission success now depends on integrating data, systems and people across domains and the ability to sense, decide and act with speed and precision. Through this investment we are scaling the environments, integration pathways, and partnerships needed to turn innovation into operational capability, while ensuring Canada retains trusted, sovereign control of its defence data and systems.”
