The work will be carried out in Seattle, Washington, and other locations across the United States, with completion expected by September 2030. The Naval Air Systems Command in Maryland is overseeing the contract.

Victoria Peterson, Boeing’s vice president and P-8 program manager, emphasized that this order reflects the Navy’s commitment to maintaining a strong maritime presence. She expressed Boeing’s dedication to providing reliable platforms to support the safety and security of the U.S. and its allies.

The tasks for this effort will be carried out in Washington, California, and other locations across the United States, with Boeing scheduled to complete the project by September 2030.

According to thedefensepost, this contract follows a previous agreement in October, where L3Harris Technologies was awarded a contract to sustain the 135 existing P-8A platforms under the U.S. Navy. Additionally, in November, Boeing secured a separate $2.38 billion deal for the construction of 15 additional KC-46A Pegasus tankers for the U.S. Air Force.

Boeing’s Poseidon System

Boeing’s P-8A Poseidon is a specialized maritime patrol aircraft designed for surveillance and anti-submarine warfare. It has a length of 130 feet (40 meters) and a wingspan of 124 feet (38 meters), making it a large and powerful aircraft. The Poseidon is powered by twin CFM turbofan engines, which give it a range of 4,500 nautical miles (5,179 miles/8,334 kilometers). It can reach an operational altitude of 41,000 feet (12,497 meters) and a top speed of 490 knots (564 miles/907 kilometers per hour), allowing it to cover vast areas quickly and efficiently.

In terms of armament, the Poseidon can be equipped with various weapons, including anti-ship and anti-submarine missiles, lightweight torpedoes, depth charges, and naval mines, making it a versatile and formidable asset in maritime defense operations.

The aircraft is equipped with a specialized surface search radar and airborne sensors developed by Raytheon, along with an electronic countermeasure system from Northrop Grumman, which enhances its effectiveness in detecting and neutralizing threats.

First introduced into service with the U.S. Navy in 2013, the P-8A Poseidon replaced the aging Lockheed P-3C Orion fleet, providing the Navy with a more advanced and capable system for maritime surveillance and anti-submarine warfare. Over time, the aircraft has been further developed into additional variants for allied countries, including the UK Royal Air Force, highlighting its international importance and versatility.
