OneWeb satellite network supports Indian Navy’s historic Kaundinya voyage

Eutelsat’s OneWeb satellite network provided reliable internet connectivity for the Indian Navy’s INSV Kaundinya during its historic sea voyage, blending ancient shipbuilding traditions with modern space technology.

Indian Kaundinya voyage

Indian Kaundinya voyage: Eutelsat has joined hands with the Indian Navy’s INSV Kaundinya team to support Project Kaundinya by providing fast satellite internet using its OneWeb satellite network. This project is special because it mixes India’s old sea history with today’s modern space technology. The journey took place on INSV Kaundinya, a traditional sailing ship made using stitched wooden planks, just like ships built in ancient India. The ship travelled from Porbandar in India to Muscat in Oman, following old sea trade routes used many centuries ago.

Eutelsat explained the importance of this effort by saying, “The collaboration brings OneWeb’s Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite services onboard a traditionally built sailing vessel that undertook a historic ocean voyage from Porbandar to Muscat.” The company shared this update on Wednesday.

OneWeb Becomes the only Lifeline at Sea

Because the ship followed ancient designs, it did not have modern communication tools onboard. To solve this problem, OneWeb’s satellite system became the only way for the crew to stay connected during the long journey at sea.

Eutelsat clearly stated, “Given the vessel’s traditional design and the absence of modern communication infrastructure, OneWeb’s LEO satellite network has been deployed as the sole communication link for the journey. The system has remained operational throughout, enabling real-time connectivity for the crew during extended periods at sea.”

This strong satellite link helped the crew send updates, receive support from land, and stay connected even when the sea conditions were tough. Sanjeev Sanyal, who is a member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council and also part of the crew, spoke about how important this connection was. He said that reliable satellite internet helped the team stay in touch with support teams, share live updates, and keep spirits high when the voyage became difficult.

Showcasing India’s Past

The journey was not just about sailing. The team recorded the entire route and shared live visuals using the OneWeb network. Eutelsat said, “The voyage is being documented along its route, with live feeds and updates supported by OneWeb’s satellite network. Eutelsat said the deployment demonstrates the resilience and adaptability of its LEO connectivity in demanding maritime environments, including its relevance for crew wellbeing, maritime security, and strategic communications.”
