INS Vaghsheer, the sixth and final submarine of the Kalvari-class, it was officially delivered to the Indian Navy on January 9, 2025. This diesel-electric attack submarine is based on the Scorpene-class design and represents a significant leap in the Navy’s underwater capabilities. The new Vaghsheer carries forward the legacy of its predecessor, a Vela-class submarine that served the Indian Navy for 22 years before being decommissioned in 1997.
The journey of INS Vaghsheer began with its launch on April 20, 2022. According to FPJ, after completing its initial phases of construction, it entered sea trials on May 19, 2023, where its systems and capabilities were rigorously tested. Although originally scheduled for commissioning in December 2024, this date was later revised to January 15, 2025.

The Indian Navy has expressed pride in the submarine’s advanced features and capabilities, describing it as a “formidable submarine with unmatched pride.” A video shared by the Navy highlighted the history of the earlier INS Vaghsheer and gave a glimpse of the innovations incorporated into the new vessel.
Features and Capabilities of INS Vaghsheer
INS Vaghsheer is designed for stealth, efficiency, and precision in modern naval warfare. As a diesel-electric attack submarine, it features advanced acoustic silencing techniques that allow it to evade enemy radar systems effectively. Its hydro-dynamically optimized shape further enhances its stealth capabilities. The submarine is armed with an impressive array of weapons, including the ability to launch both torpedoes and tube-launched anti-ship missiles with precision. It can carry up to 18 torpedoes and launch them simultaneously with other weapons.
Measuring 67.5 meters in length and 6.2 meters in beam, the submarine is built for both agility and durability. It can reach a speed of 11 knots (20 km/h) on the surface and 20 knots (37 km/h) underwater. With a maximum diving depth of 350 meters, INS Vaghsheer is capable of deep-sea operations, and its endurance allows it to remain at sea for up to 50 days without resupply, making it a versatile asset for long-term missions.

The Kalvari-Class Submarines
INS Vaghsheer belongs to the Kalvari-class, a series of diesel-electric attack submarines developed under India’s Project-75 initiative. These submarines were constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai, with design and technology provided by the French defense company Naval Group. The Kalvari-class is based on the French Scorpene-class design, which is known for its reliability, stealth, and advanced combat capabilities.
The Kalvari-class fleet now includes six submarines, with INS Kalvari, INS Khanderi, INS Karanj, INS Vela, and INS Vagir already in active service. Each of these vessels plays a critical role in strengthening the Indian Navy’s operational reach and strategic presence. INS Vaghsheer, as the latest addition, is expected to further enhance India’s naval capabilities, marking another milestone in the country’s efforts to modernize and expand its underwater fleet.
By incorporating cutting-edge technology and robust design, INS Vaghsheer symbolizes India’s growing self-reliance in defense manufacturing and its commitment to maintaining maritime security.
