A glorious excursion that commenced with the INS Nirupak

INS Nirupak, the third vessel of its class, capsized at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) on June 4, 1981. During its time at Visakhapatnam, the survey ship was under the administrative and operational supervision of the Flag Officer Commanding in Chief, Eastern Naval Command. Vice Admiral Jayant Ganpat Nadkarni, who was then the Chief of Naval Staff, formally inducted the ship into the Indian Navy on August 14, 1985.

Acknowledgment of its magnificent service

With its unwavering commitment to hydrography—the systematic delineation of the physical characteristics of aquatic environments and the land surfaces that adjoin them—INS Nirupak was awarded the Admiral Jal Cursetji Rolling Trophy for best survey vessel on four separate occasions during its service, namely in 1994, 1995, 2005, and 2009.

The vessel demonstrated proactive engagement in several humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) endeavors. One of the most renowned endeavors was Operation Gambhir (Tsunami Relief), which the vessel carried out in 2004 as a hospital ship, delivering vital aid to Indonesia.

The INS Nirupak deciphers mysteries of the ocean

After illuminating numerous enigmas of expansive blue surfaces throughout its illustrious 38-year service, the INS Nirupak bequeaths an enduring heritage of nautical expertise. This vessel has gained recognition for its ability to conduct hydrographic surveys, which have not only impacted naval operations but have also played a crucial role in studying the physical, chemical, and biological aspects of the ocean. The provision of vital data has significantly contributed to the improvement of the nation’s defense infrastructure in the expansive ocean region. Furthermore, the data acquired by the vessel has contributed to the comprehension of the ocean and its physical phenomena by other countries.

The conclusion of an era

INS Nirupak, an enduring symbol of maritime prowess, bore witness to the valor of twenty commanding officers during its lengthy and eventful history. At dusk on January 29, the naval ensign and commissioning pendant were ceremoniously hoisted down for the final time in the presence of officers and seamen who had served aboard the survey ship.
