India T-72 Tank: India’s Ministry of Defence has signed a new deal worth $248 million with Russia’s defence company, Rosoboronexport, to buy powerful engines for the Indian Army’s T-72 tanks. These engines are much stronger than the current ones, providing 1,000 horsepower (HP) compared to the older 780 HP engines. The deal includes engines in three forms:
- Fully assembled
- Partially assembled
- Completely disassembled for local production

In the agreement, Russia will also share technology with India. This technology transfer will help Chennai-based Armored Vehicles Nigam Limited (Heavy Vehicle Factory) to build these engines in India. This move supports the Indian government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative
The T-72 tanks are a n important part of the Indian Army’s tank fleet. By upgrading them with these new 1,000 HP engines, the tanks will become faster, more reliable, and better suited for modern battlefields. This upgrade will improve the tanks’ mobility and fighting power, making them more effective in future conflicts.

According to India Today, Defence Ministry officials say this deal is a big step in strengthening the Indian Army’s combat readiness. Instead of replacing the entire tank fleet, upgrading the engines will extend the life of the existing T-72 tanks while making them more powerful. This approach saves money and ensures the army remains well prepared for any challenges.
The deal also highlights India’s focus on self-reliance in defence. By producing these engines locally, India is reducing its dependence on foreign suppliers and building its own defence manufacturing capabilities. This is especially important given the current security challenges in the region.
