T-72 Tanks High-Tech Upgrade: The Indian Army is looking at a new way to use its old T-72 tanks. Instead of sending these tanks straight to retirement, the Army wants to turn them into robotic combat vehicles that can be driven from far away or run with partial autonomy. The idea is simple. Let machines do the risky work first, so soldiers do not have to go into the most dangerous places. The Army has already put a T-72 conversion idea into the ADITI 4 challenge list under iDEX, with the official title “Conversion of Tank T-72 into Autonomous Armoured Fighting Veh (AFV) Platform”.

The T-72 is not a new tank for India. News reports say it entered Indian Army service in 1978 and became one of the Army’s main fighting tanks for many years. The new plan is not about throwing that platform away. It is about giving it a second life with modern digital tools, remote control systems, and smarter battlefield use.

How the Robotic Tank Idea Works

Robotic combat vehicles are armored machines that do not always need a crew inside them.

  • They are meant to connect with digital battlefield systems too

In a war zone, that can help lower risk for troops and still keep the tank useful.

For the T-72 program, the Army is looking at battle jobs that are too risky for people. These include minefield breaching, forward scouting, watching hostile areas, and support work in places where the enemy is strongly dug in. In plain words, the tanks would go where danger is high and people should not be the first ones there. A recent report also said the Army is looking at IP-based control systems and manned-unmanned teaming, which means crewed and uncrewed platforms can work together in future battles.

More Than One Upgrade for the T-72 Fleet

This robotic plan is only one part of the Army’s wider T-72 work. The old tanks are still getting normal upgrades too. Recent reports say 96 T-72 tanks have already been fitted with Thermal Imaging Fire Control Systems, which should help with night fighting and better targeting. Earlier defence reports also mention thermal sights, trawl assemblies for mine clearing, and other systems built to keep the T-72 useful for longer.

The bigger plan is also linked to India’s future tank roadmap. The Ministry of Defence’s TPCR 2025 says the Future Ready Combat Vehicle is meant to replace the T-72 fleet over time. It is being planned as a highly networked platform with human-machine teaming, battlefield management systems, loitering munitions, drones, cyber protection, and other newer war tools. So the T-72 story is really two things at once. One part is upgrade. The other part is replacement.

This makes the old T-72 a strange but useful bridge between the past and the future. It started as a classic tank. Now it may become a robot-like battlefield vehicle before the Army finally moves to the next generation of combat platforms.
