Russia Agrees Limited Role In ₹63,000 Crore Super Sukhoi Modernisation Programme

Russia will support India’s Super Sukhoi upgrade by helping integrate and certify the Su-30MKI flight control system. The rest of the ₹63,000 crore modernisation will use mostly Indian-made technologies.

Super Sukhoi Upgrade of 84 Su-30MKI

India Super Sukhoi Upgrade: India’s big Su-30MKI upgrade plan, often called the “Super Sukhoi” programme, is now moving ahead with a limited Russian role. The main job will still stay with Indian teams, but Russia is expected to help with the flight control side of the work. That part matters because the Su-30MKI fleet is a very large part of the Indian Air Force’s strength, and recent reporting says the fleet still has more than 260 aircraft in service.

The important piece here is the DFCC, which means the Digital Fly-by-Wire Flight Control Computer. This system has to work smoothly with all the new Indian equipment that will go into the jet. Reports say Russia has now agreed to share technical papers, source code access, and testing help for this one part, so the upgrade does not get stuck for years. Without that help, Indian engineers may have had to rebuild and certify the whole flight control software from scratch, which would have taken much longer.

What will Change in the Jet

The Super Sukhoi plan is not just a small update. It is meant to give the Su-30MKI a big new life with mostly Indian systems. The aircraft is expected to get the “Virupaksha” GaN-based AESA radar, an indigenous IRST sensor, new mission computers, modern cockpit screens, and other homegrown avionics. The idea is to make the jet smarter, stronger, and easier to keep flying for many more years.

India is also pushing hard under “Aatmanirbhar Bharat”, so Russia will not be part of the radar, cockpit display, or electronic warfare upgrades. Those areas are being done inside India with DRDO, HAL, and private firms.

The Defence Ministry already cleared an electronic warfare package for the Su-30MKI in December 2024, and HAL signed a contract in December 2024 to build 12 more Su-30MKI jets with 62.6% indigenous content.

Timeline Importance

Reports say the first prototype upgrades are meant to begin around 2027, with 84 jets in the first batch expected to be modernised by 2032. The first Super Sukhoi prototype is also being discussed as a 2028-2029 test aircraft, and the wider goal is to keep the fighter useful well into the 2050s.

Russia had earlier pushed its own Su-30SM2 style upgrade with parts like the AL-41F1S engine and Irbis-E radar, but India did not take that full package. Instead, it chose a more Indian-made path. Even so, Russian help for DFCC integration is seen as useful because it keeps the project on time and avoids major delays in flight safety work.

The modernised jets are expected to carry a stronger weapons mix too. The Su-30MKI fleet is already being tied to BrahMos, and newer plans include Astra missiles, Rudram anti-radiation weapons, and other long-range strike weapons.
