India and US Defence ties: The Indian Air Force (IAF) and the United States Air Force (USAF) have started a four day joint air exercise in southern India. The event, held from 10 to 13 November 2025 will be bringing together some of the most powerful aircraft from both nations.
It is a huge step in defence cooperation and shows how both countries are getting stronger at working together in the sky. The drill features the USAF’s long-range B-1B Lancer bomber and India’s top fighter jets like the Su-30 MKI and Mirage-2000.

India and US Defence ties
Over the past few years, India and the US have grown closer in defence and security. They already share the “Major Defence Partner” status and have held many joint drills. But this new air exercise is special. It is the first time the USAF’s B-1B Lancer bomber is flying together with India’s Su-30 MKIs and Mirage-2000 fighters in Indian airspace.Indian pilots are also getting valuable experience flying alongside a heavy bomber like the B-1B.
Challenges
It is also not just about training but about trust and teamwork. “By conducting missions with diverse platforms from different air-power doctrines, both nations advance their ability to work seamlessly in coalition or combined operations,” an official explained. This means that India and the US can now plan and carry out complex missions together if they ever need to.
Still, this kind of mission cause the aircraft come from very different designs and systems the Su-30 is Russian, the Mirage-2000 is French, and the B-1B is American. Mixing them in one operation takes a lot of hard work and careful coordination. The teams must handle communication links, flight plans, and safety rules like keeping everything smooth in the sky. Conducting such fast and heavy missions over southern India also needs solid planning and full control of the airspace.
Some also say that this kind of exercise can cause strategic reactions from other countries in the region, as it shows how closely India and the US are now working together. These missions also need a lot of resources like fuel, ground control teams, and logistics support.

Both sides want to make the next exercises even bigger and more advanced. They plan to add more aircraft such as mid-air refuellers and AEW&C planes that help track the sky. Future drills could also include multi-theatre missions where planes operate from different bases at the same time. Experts believe that “making such bomber-fighter integration a regular feature will embed procedures, build muscle memory and deepen partnership.”
