Navratna Upgrade for Cochin Shipyard and GRSE: The Government of India is thinking about giving a higher status to some public companies in the defence and shipping fields. Two companies that are being looked at closely are Cochin Shipyard Limited and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE). These companies may soon get something called “Navratna” status, which is a big step up for them.

This upgrade will help these companies work more freely. They will be able to take faster decisions and grow their business without waiting too much for government approval.

Cochin Shipyard May get a Big Boost

Cochin Shipyard Limited is right now a “Miniratna” company. But now the government is thinking to move it to “Navratna” level. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has already sent this idea for review. At present, the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) is checking it.

If this change happens, the company will get more power in money matters and daily work decisions. GRSE is also very close to getting the same upgrade. Its proposal has already been approved by the DPE. Sources say that a group of different ministries is now doing the final checks. The official announcement may come as early as next month.

Navratna Status

If both companies become Navratna, they will get more freedom. They can invest up to ₹1,000 crore on their own without. The government is also checking how these “Ratna” categories are given. It wants to make sure companies get enough freedom but also stay responsible.

In India, these government companies are divided into three groups based on their performance and importance. Maharatna companies are the top level. They can invest up to ₹5,000 crore by themselves. Some examples are Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, Indian Oil Corporation, and NTPC Limited.

Navratna companies are in the middle. They can invest up to ₹1,000 crore. Some examples are Bharat Electronics Limited, Engineers India Limited, and Container Corporation of India. Miniratna companies have less power compared to the other two groups. Airports Authority of India and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited are examples.
