Boeing, an American aerospace giant, has joined forces with state-owned HPCL to foster a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) ecosystem in India. This collaboration seeks to scale up SAF production domestically, support its certification, and urge policy development for a strong SAF framework in the country.
The partnership aligns with insights from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which highlights India’s potential as a key SAF producer due to its ethanol supplies and availability of lipid feedstocks. IATA, representing over 340 airlines, underscores SAF’s role in reducing carbon emissions during the aviation sector’s decarbonization push.
Emphasizing innovation, HPCL has championed SAF commercialization through its HP Green R&D Centre, which utilizes the patented Trijet technology to convert used cooking oil into SAF. Together with Boeing, HPCL aims to implement sustainability standards across the SAF supply chain and provide educational opportunities in line with global sustainability practices.
