AI and Quantum Tech development: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has highlighted the need to adopt cutting-edge technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Quantum Computing to bolster India’s defence and innovation landscape. Speaking at the Indian National Academy of Engineering’s (INAE) Annual Convention at IIT Delhi, Singh urged scientists and engineers to gain expertise in emerging technologies critical to the nation’s future.
“Modern warfare is evolving rapidly, and the defence sector cannot remain untouched. Our aim should be to first master these technologies so they can be leveraged for the welfare of our people and to fulfill their basic needs,” Singh stated, highlighting the transformative impact of AI, Quantum Computing, and other niche technologies across sectors.

According to TheWeek, Singh underscored the role of government initiatives such as Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) and the Technology Development Fund (TDF) in fostering innovation. These programs aim to leverage the creativity and skills of India’s youth to enhance self-reliance in defence manufacturing. Expressing optimism, Singh stated, “These initiatives will not only make India self-reliant in defence production but also enable the country to export cutting-edge technologies to the world.”
India’s Progress as Global Innovation Hub
Acknowledging the synergy between public and private sectors, academia, and innovators, Singh praised the collective efforts driving India’s progress as a global innovation hub. “We are witnessing a defining moment where India is exporting weapons it once imported. This is a testament to the nation’s growing technological prowess,” he remarked.
The Defence Minister also emphasized the role of premier academic institutions, particularly IIT Delhi, in advancing frontier technologies. He called for deeper collaboration between such institutions and government development initiatives, noting, “In developed countries, academic campuses play a critical role in technological progress. We must explore how to co-opt institutions of scientific excellence into our development campaigns.”

Praising India’s demographic advantage as the world’s youngest nation, Singh commended the passion and creativity of Indian youth. Assuring them of the government’s full support, including funding, he said, “The government is committed to turning your ideas into reality. With our combined efforts, we will achieve our vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat.’”
The three-day INAE convention, attended by 400 engineers, technologists, and researchers, features discussions and talks on advancing technology. Participants include INAE Fellows, Young Associates, faculty from academia, industry experts, R&D professionals, and members of strategic sectors. The event provides a platform for networking and knowledge-sharing, with panel discussions and plenary talks by leading experts on various topics.
