Poonch Civil Defence Air Raid: Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir is getting ready for a major civil defence practice this week. The drill will act out war-like emergency scenes such as air raid warnings and power blackouts. Officials have planned it from April 20 to April 24. The idea is to see how well the system works if there is a serious emergency and how people respond when lights go off and warnings are sounded.
The district administration has told all related departments to work together for this exercise. The Deputy Commissioner’s office in Poonch has asked department heads to stay in close touch with Civil Defence teams so everything happens in an organised way. Officials want the full exercise to run smoothly without confusion.

Order Sent to Departments
An official order shared in connection with the drill says: “Kindly find enclosed herewith the communication received from the Dy. Inspector General, Civil Defence & SDRF, Jammu, vide No. CD-Revamping/2404-38 dated 18-04-2026, regarding the subject cited above. In this regard, you are requested to coordinate with Civil Defence authorities and other line departments to ensure effective planning, preparedness, and smooth conduct of the said mock exercise in District Poonch w.e.f. 20th to 24th April 2026,” the order, accessed by News18, reads.
The administration has also told departments not to wait until the last moment. It wants all important things ready before the drill begins. That includes public awareness work, needed supplies, movement planning, and teamwork with other groups involved. In simple words, the government wants everyone prepared early so the mock exercise can be done properly.

Why is the Drill being Held?
The main reason for this exercise is to check emergency response systems. Officers want to know if teams can react fast during a fake blackout or air raid situation. They also want to see if the public follows instructions during such a practice. One official said the mock event is meant to test both the response of agencies and the cooperation of people during blackout conditions.
This is not the first big civil defence activity linked to recent security worries in the region. Reports say the last major civil defence action in the area happened after the Pahalgam terror attack, in which 25 tourists and one local person were killed in Kashmir. That earlier response was carried out under Operation Sindoor.
