T-90 Tanks: The Ministry of Defence has given approval to support the Indian Army with a new and stronger tank engine. The plan focuses on making a 1,350 horsepower engine inside India for the T-90 Bhishma main battle tank. This step aims to improve the tank’s power and movement in difficult areas like mountains and deserts. The project follows the MAKE-I system where the government helps fund new defence technology made in India.
Under this plan the government will pay up to 70% of the cost needed to build and test the engine. Each development company can receive support of up to ₹250 crore. The project also clearly says that at least 50% of the parts and work must come from Indian sources, reported Defence.in. This rule supports the Atmanirbhar Bharat goal of making important defence systems inside the country.

Why the Army needs a Stronger Engine?
The Indian Army currently uses a 1,000 HP engine in its T-90 tanks. While this engine works well in flat areas it struggles in high mountains where oxygen levels are low. In places like eastern Ladakh and Sikkim the tank loses power because the engine cannot burn fuel properly. The new 1,350 HP engine will solve this problem by giving extra power even in thin air.
With this upgrade, the 46-tonne tank will move faster and climb hills more easily. The extra power will help it cross mountains and deserts without slowing. Commanders will move tanks quicker and react faster in battle.

This engine project also helps India’s defence industry grow stronger. Making powerful engines for tanks is very hard and India has depended on foreign technology in the past. Through this project the Defence Ministry wants Indian companies to learn and master engine design heat control and compact systems.
