Missiles From Cargo Planes: Modern war is not just about having more weapons. It is about hitting fast, hitting deep, and making the other side lose the chance to answer back. That is why airbases, radar sites, missile launchers and command centres are such important targets in the opening hours of a conflict. India’s Operation SINDOOR in May 2025 followed that logic.
The official government write-up says Indian forces struck terrorist infrastructure without crossing the Line of Control or the international boundary, and it described the operation as a sign of India’s growing self-reliance in military technology.

The same idea is often linked to the phrase “shock and awe”. The basic goal is simple: create a huge burst of pressure early on so the enemy cannot react smoothly. Even if a runway is repaired later or a radar is moved, the short-term gap can still matter a lot. In war, a few lost minutes can change everything.
How Rapid Dragon works?
The United States has been testing one way to do this from the sky. The program is called Rapid Dragon, and it uses cargo aircraft as temporary missile launchers. Instead of heavily modifying a bomber or fighter, the missiles are packed on pallets and dropped from the rear ramp of aircraft like the C-130 and C-17.
The Air Force Research Laboratory said Rapid Dragon would use standard airdrop procedures, and by late 2021 it had already completed a live-fire test with a production JASSM-ER cruise missile.
That is why people describe these aircraft as “missile trucks”. The idea is not to turn a transport plane into a bomber forever. It is to give a force a fast way to add more launchers for one mission. The Air Force later pushed the concept forward into Dragon Cart, which became a Program of Record in April 2026. That means the idea moved from experiment to an official capability path.

Could India build something similar?
India has the building blocks, but not a copy-paste solution. The Indian Air Force already flies C-130J aircraft, and the service also operates C-17 heavy transport aircraft. India also has cruise-missile experience of its own. The Air Force has already integrated BrahMos on the Su-30 MKI, giving it a long-range strike option from a fighter platform.
But a palletised strike system would still need a lighter weapon than BrahMos, along with release trials, software, targeting links and airframe certification. A heavy missile is hard to pack in large numbers. That is why a smaller stand-off weapon matters. HAL’s CATS Hunter has also been shown as a stand-off weapon concept, which makes it interesting for a mass-launch idea if the final design and range fit the need.
There is also fresh global movement in this space. Embraer and Anduril announced on July 21, 2026 that they will explore palletised Barracuda-500M use on the C-390. Embraer is also working with Mahindra in India on localisation and future C-390 support. So the race to build cargo-plane missile systems is no longer just American. It is becoming a wider airpower idea, and India may well keep watching it closely.
