Lt Gen N S Raja Subramani: The government has chosen Lieutenant General N S Raja Subramani (Retd.) as the next Chief of Defence Staff and Secretary of the Department of Military Affairs. He will take charge from the day he assumes office and will stay there until further orders. General Anil Chauhan will finish his term on May 30, 2026. On the same day, the government also named Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan as the next Chief of the Naval Staff. Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi will retire on May 31, 2026.

Lt Gen Subramani’s Long Army Career
Lt Gen Subramani has been serving as Military Adviser in the National Security Council Secretariat since September 1, 2025. Before that, he was Vice Chief of the Army Staff from July 1, 2024 to July 31, 2025. He was also General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Central Command from March 2023 to June 2024.
The official note says he has served for more than 40 years and has worked in many command, staff, and teaching roles. He commanded 16 Garhwal Rifles in Assam during counter-insurgency work under Operation Rhino, 168 Infantry Brigade in Jammu and Kashmir, 17 Mountain Division in the Central Sector, and later 2 Corps, which is the Army’s premier strike corps on the western front. He has also served as Defence Attaché in Kazakhstan.
He studied at the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy. He was commissioned into the 8th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles on December 14, 1985. He also studied at Joint Services Command Staff College in Bracknell, National Defence College in New Delhi, King’s College London, and Madras University. For his service, he has received the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal.
Theatre Commands
The new CDS will take over at a time when the armed forces are still moving toward theatre commands. The report says three sets of recommendations on this plan have already been sent to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

The aim is to build three main commands. “The plan envisages three such formations: a China-focused Northern Theatre Command, a Pakistan-focused Western Theatre Command, and a Maritime Theatre Command. Once established, these formations will integrate units from the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force under a single commander, enhancing efficiency through the unification of personnel, assets, infrastructure, and logistics across the three services.”
“These changes will have a significant impact on the induction of technologies ranging from autonomous systems to embedded artificial intelligence (AI).”
The report also says this shift is being seen as one of the biggest military reforms in India since Independence. It has taken time because the services had to sort out concerns from different sides. Along with theatre commands, the wider push includes more joint planning, better integration, and new tech-driven work in defence.
New Navy Chief
Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan will take over as the Navy chief. He is now serving as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command. He was commissioned into the Navy on July 1, 1987 and is a specialist in Communication and Electronic Warfare. His career has included command of missile vessels INS Vidyut and INS Vinash, missile corvette INS Kulish, guided missile destroyer INS Mysore, and aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya. He has also held senior training and staff jobs in the Navy, including Vice Chief of the Naval Staff before this new appointment.
