India Tests MIRV Missile ‘Divyastra’, Boosts Nuclear Strike Power

India successfully tested the MIRV-capable Agni-5 missile ‘Divyastra’, allowing one missile to strike multiple targets separately. The advanced system strengthens India’s long-range nuclear deterrence against China and Pakistan.

India Tests MIRV Missile Divyastra: India has carried out a fresh and successful flight trial of an advanced Agni missile with MIRV system from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island in Odisha on May 8, 2026. The Defence Ministry said the missile carried multiple payloads and they were aimed at different targets spread across a large area in the Indian Ocean Region. The ministry also said the tracking work was done by ground and ship-based stations, and the flight data showed that all mission goals were met. It added that the missile was built by DRDO labs with support from industries across India.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised DRDO, the Indian Army and industry after the test. He said, “This will add an incredible capability to the country’s defence preparedness against the growing threat perceptions”. The trial was also watched by senior DRDO scientists and Indian Army personnel.

What is MIRV?

MIRV means Multiple Independently Targeted Re-Entry Vehicle. In easy words, it is a missile that can carry more than one payload. Each payload can go to a different target after it separates during flight. That is why one missile can threaten many places at the same time. The official release said this test again proved that India can target multiple strategic places with a single missile system.

This was the second known MIRV-capable Agni-5 test. The first one was Mission Divyastra in March 2024, which was also confirmed by the government. So this latest test is another big step for the same missile line.

Agni-5 is officially described as a missile with a range of over 5,000 km. That puts it in the very long-range class and explains why it gets so much attention in defence talks. A ballistic missile follows a curved path, and the usual phases are boost, midcourse and terminal. An ICBM is generally defined as a ballistic missile with a range of more than 5,600 km.

People also talk about speed here because missile warheads come back very fast. Mach is just a way to measure speed against the speed of sound. NASA says hypersonic flight is usually above Mach 5. That means more than five times the speed of sound. Fast re-entry makes interception hard because defenders get less time to react.

The Agni missile family has grown over time. Agni-1 started with shorter reach, then Agni-2 and Agni-3 extended that reach further. Agni-4 improved mobility and survivability. Agni-5 brought canister launch ability and longer range. There is also discussion around Agni-VI. Recent reporting says DRDO chief Samir V Kamat said the programme is ready to move ahead once the government gives approval.
