INS Nistar joins Indian Navy to power deep-sea rescue missions

INS Nistar is India’s first locally built diving support ship. Designed for deep-sea rescue, it marks a big step in strengthening India’s underwater and submarine rescue operations.

Indian Navy Ship Nistar

INS Nistar: The Indian Navy added NS Nistar to its fleet on July 18, 2025, in Visakhapatnam. This ship is very special because it is the first diving support vessel that India has fully designed and built on its own. The ceremony happened in the presence of Sanjay Seth, the Minister of State for Defence. The ship was made by Hindustan Shipyard Limited and is the first out of two such ships that will help the Navy in deep-sea missions.

INS Nistar has been made to handle very difficult underwater jobs. It can take part in deep-sea rescue missions and can do saturation diving too. These are advanced operations that only a few countries in the world can do. The minister said that this ship proves how strong India has become in making its own warships and using its own smart ideas.

He called INS Nistar a big step forward for India and a big moment in the country’s journey to build a modern navy using its own power. The minister also said the ship shows how the Navy is always ready to help in emergencies and to keep the region safe. He was confident that India’s armed forces are always ready to deal with any kind of threat from enemies.

According to TOI, the Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, spoke at the event and explained how useful INS Nistar is going to be. He said the ship will be a huge help in saving submarines and the people inside them if anything goes wrong under the sea. The ship will also allow India to help nearby countries, making India the best choice in the region for submarine rescue work.

He said, “Nistar will provide crucial submarine rescue support to the Indian Navy and our regional partners. It will help India emerge as a ‘Preferred Submarine Rescue Partner’ in the region. The commissioning of Nistar showcases the maturity of our maritime industrial base and exemplifies Aatmanirbhar Bharat.”

INS Nistar has some of the most modern tools on board. It carries machines like Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), Self-Propelled Hyperbaric Life Boats, and Diving Compression Chambers. These machines help the ship do diving and rescue operations even at a depth of 300 meters under the sea. It is also used as a main ship to carry smaller deep-submergence rescue vessels.

The ship is 118 meters long and weighs over 10,000 tons. It is a big part of the Navy’s plan to improve what it can do underwater. More than 120 small and medium Indian companies helped build it. Over 80% of the ship’s parts and systems were made in India. That shows how far Indian shipbuilding has come. The ship’s design and features are at the same level as the ones made in top countries around the world.
