India Sudarshan Chakra Defence Project: India and Russia are stepping into a new chapter in their long friendship in defence. Moscow is showing big interest in India’s Sudarshan Chakra project, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi talked about on Independence Day. This system is seen as a very modern air defence platform that will push India’s own strength forward. Russia’s diplomat Denis Babushkin said that Russian equipment and skills can be added to this programme.

The Sudarshan Chakra plan is important for India’s military growth. Russia has been India’s old partner in weapons and technology, and this new project will give Moscow a chance to keep this link alive. Russia’s part in it will help make new technology together and also make sure Indian forces can use it well with the weapons they already have.
Energy trade under pressure
India and Russia are also strongly linked in the field of oil and gas. Babushkin openly attacked America’s push on India to cut down oil coming from Russia, saying it is “unjustified” and also bad for world stability. India kept defending its choice to buy oil from Moscow, saying that it is about price, security, and what is best for the nation. According to Indian masterminds, India’s import of Russian oil jumped big, reaching 35.1% in 2024-25 compared to only 1.7% a few years ago in 2019-20. These cheaper barrels helped India handle sudden changes in the global oil market.
Western sanctions on Russia have made things harder for Indian businesses too. Washington went ahead and put a 25% tariff on Indian products, but strangely it did not do the same with China, even though Beijing is the top buyer of Russian crude. This has made both India and Russia upset, calling it unfair treatment. Russian officials also said that sanctions could make oil prices change by almost 5%.

Still, Moscow says they will handle these issues with talks and adjustments. They also accused Western countries of having a “neo-colonial mindset” and trying to limit India’s freedom in choosing its own path.
Trade goals
Both countries are also making plans for the future of their trade. They want to raise total trade to $100 billion by the year 2030. Russia is also opening its own market to Indian goods, so if America’s tariffs block India from Western markets, Moscow can become a big buyer. This idea supports India’s wish to sell more to new regions and not stay dependent on developed countries only.
