India’s New Bharat Tank: India’s state-run company Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited or AVNL is making a new tank called Bharat. It is a light tank, and the company plans to show its first prototype by the end of 2026. The tank will be fully made in India under the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat plan, which means “self-reliant India.”
AVNL is based in Chennai and already makes big tanks like Arjun, Bhishma, and Ajeya. It also builds vehicles like Sarath, which carry soldiers into battle. The company’s goal is to make world-class tanks that can move fast, fight hard, and protect troops in any terrain.

During the AeroDefCon 2025 show at the Chennai Trade Centre, one company official said, “The design and development phase will be completed by the end of 2025, and by late 2026, we aim to roll out the first prototype.” He said AVNL’s main focus has always been building strong and modern battle tanks.
Built for Mountains
The Bharat tank will weigh about 25 tonnes, which makes it much lighter than big tanks like Arjun that weigh around 60 tonnes. Because it is lighter, it will move faster and work better in mountain and border areas where heavy tanks can’t go easily. The tank will also have powerful weapons and strong armour.
AVNL showed five advanced tank models at the defence expo to highlight India’s progress in building its own battle machines. Reports say the Bharat tank will use new materials and local technology to make it both tough and easy to move.
Self-Reliance in Defence
AVNL says the Bharat tank is a big part of India’s dream to make its own defence equipment instead of buying from other countries. The company has five main factories in India and is now focusing on developing new generation tanks and vehicles.

Experts say the Bharat tank will help India’s army in border and high-altitude areas, especially along the northern borders. Because it is fast, light, and easy to transport, it will give India an advantage in tough terrains.
If everything goes as planned, AVNL will finish designing the tank by the end of 2025 and then show the first real prototype by late 2026. Once it passes all tests, the Bharat tank could soon become an important part of India’s army.
