SLINEX-25 exercise in Colombo: The twelfth edition of the Sri Lanka-India Naval Exercise, known as SLINEX-25, took place in Sri Lanka from 14 to 18 August 2025. The exercise had two parts, first a harbour phase in Colombo from 14 to 16 August, and then a sea phase in nearby waters from 17 to 18 August.
This exercise has been happening since 2005 and over the years it turned into one of the most important training activities between the two navies. The main aim is always to make the two sides work together better, to share experience, and to improve cooperation at sea. The last edition before this was held in Visakhapatnam, India from 17 to 20 December 2024, reported Deccan Herald.

For SLINEX-25, the Indian Navy sent two ships, the guided missile destroyer INS Rana and the fleet tanker INS Jyoti. From the Sri Lankan side, two advanced offshore patrol vessels joined, SLNS Gajabahu and SLNS Vijayabahu. Special forces from both navies also joined in the drills. The Sri Lanka Air Force also added its BEL412 helicopters during the activities, making the exercise even more wide and useful.
Harbour and Sea Phase
During the harbour phase in Colombo, the two navies met for many professional exchanges. They also joined in cultural programs like yoga, sports, and other friendly events.
The sea phase brought more action and practical training. The two navies carried out artillery firing practice, tested communication systems, and trained together in navigation and seamanship. They also worked on Visit-Board-Search-Seizure operations, which are important for dealing with illegal activity at sea. One part of the training was replenishment and refueling while still moving at sea.
Importance
SLINEX is not just about training ships, it also has bigger meaning for the Indian Ocean. It links with India’s SAGAR plan, which is about keeping the seas safe and open for all. By doing this kind of drill, India and Sri Lanka build more trust and also get ready for issues like piracy and smuggling.

This year was also special because Prime Minister Narendra Modi got Sri Lanka’s highest civilian award, the Sri Lanka Mitra Vibhushan. The silver medal came with nine Sri Lankan gems and symbols like the Puna Kalash, Sun, Moon and the Dharma Chakra, showing the shared culture and friendship.
Both nations also work together in other defence areas. In August 2024, they held the Mitra Shakti exercise at Maduru Oya in Sri Lanka, which was for the armies, while SLINEX focuses on the navies.
