India sees this exercise as an important part of its defence cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region. By training together India and Seychelles can build stronger military ties. The exercise also helps both sides share real operational experience and improve readiness for peacekeeping and security missions.

What Exercise LAMITIYE Means

Exercise LAMITIYE is a joint training activity that takes place every two years between India and Seychelles. The name of the exercise has a special meaning. The word “LAMITIYE” means “Friendship” in Creole, which represents the close relationship between the two countries.

The exercise has a long history. It was first conducted in 2001 in Seychelles. Since then it has continued as one of the regular defence engagements between India and its partner country in the Indian Ocean region.

The 2026 exercise is important because this time all three branches of the Indian Armed Forces are taking part together for the first time. This includes the Indian Army, the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force.

The Indian side has sent soldiers from the Assam Regiment for the training activities. The Navy has also deployed the naval warship INS Trikand. The Indian Air Force is supporting the exercise with a C-130 transport aircraft.

Training Activities and Military Cooperation

During the twelve day exercise soldiers from both nations will train in several military areas. The main goal is to improve how both forces operate together during difficult situations.

The training will include operations in semi urban areas. This type of environment is important because many modern security threats happen near towns or populated areas. Peacekeeping cooperation is another important part of the exercise. Both forces will practice how they can work together during international peacekeeping missions.

Troops will also conduct tactical drills where they learn how to deal with possible threats in complex situations. These drills help soldiers practice planning and executing missions together.

Military Cooperation

The exercise will also show how modern military equipment and new technologies are used during operations. Over the twelve days many different training activities will take place. Soldiers will take part in field training exercises and discuss combat situations. They will also study case examples of past operations and attend professional lectures and demonstrations.

Troops from both sides will carry out tactical drills in semi urban terrain to simulate real missions. At the end of the training there will be a two day validation exercise where both forces will test everything they learned during the programme.
