India’s Defence Production: India is producing more defensive equipment domestically, marking a significant advancement in the field. With several initiatives, the Department of Defence Production has already achieved indigenization for 2,920 out of the 4,666 specified goods. The Ministry of Defence has implemented industry-friendly measures in the Make-1 and Make-2 categories, such as a loosening of qualifying requirements and less paperwork.

As per Amit Satija, Director (DIP), Department of military Production, India is progressing “fast and steady” in military production, having indigenized 2,920 items out of 4,666 listed items on Thursday. He was presenting at a state-level conclave of Defence MSMEs in Nagpur, which was hosted by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry) on the subject of “Enhancing the participation of MSMEs in the Defence sector.”

According to Satija, the Ministry of Defence, particularly the Department of Defence Production, has been involved in a number of projects.

“Out of 4,666 defence items, including assemblies, sub-assemblies, raw materials, critical spares and components etc, which were listed for indigenisation, 2,920 items have already been indigenised,” he stated.

Regarding the Make-1 and Make-2 categories, Satija mentioned that a number of features that are beneficial to the sector are already in place, including lenient qualifying requirements, few paperwork requirements, and other measures for taking into account proposals from both individuals and the business.

within the Make 2 approach, 102 projects pertaining to the Army, Navy, and Air Force have received in-principle approval; 44 projects fall within the Make-1 category. Under the Make 3 category, three projects have received in-principle approval,” he continued.

He claimed that the Department of Defence is making good progress towards the indigenization target and that between 40 and 50 licences are granted annually for defence manufacture.

Government-funded programmes are referred to as “Make-I,” whilst industry-funded activities are covered under “Make-II.” The government created the Make III category with the intention of promoting import substitution and self-reliance.
