IIT Ropar-Indian Army M.Tech Defence Technology Programme: The Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT Ropar) has established a partnership with the Indian Army to create a Master of Technology (M.Tech) program which focuses on Defence Technology. The new defense technology academic program will create advanced defense technology research capabilities which the technical institute and armed forces partnership will develop.
IIT Ropar-Indian Army M.Tech Defence Technology Programme
On 30 January 2026, IIT Ropar signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the Indian Army’s Armoured Corps Centre & School (ACC&S) to jointly launch this unique postgraduate programme designed specifically for serving army officers. The partnership unites an Indian Institute of Technology which ranks among the fastest growing institutions with Indian Army operational knowledge to create a new standard for defence education at advanced levels.
“By bringing together the intellectual rigour of IIT Ropar with the operational excellence of the Indian Army, we are creating a unique model that will produce defence technology leaders capable of driving India’s self-reliance in critical defence sectors. This is our contribution to Viksit Bharat 2047,” IIT Ropar Director Rajeev Ahuja said.

Crafting a Curriculum for the Future
The M.Tech programme requires students to complete the M.Tech (Defence Technology) program which combines expertise from both IIT Ropar faculty members and military professionals to create its curriculum. The program establishes connections between academic knowledge and practical military operations. The main features of the program contain the following elements:
Applied Learning & Hands-on Research: The program requires students to use actual defense projects together with simulated exercises and laboratory experiments to address real-world defense problems.
Innovation-Driven Problem Solving: Officers will work on technology problems which directly apply to battlefield scenarios and armored vehicle systems and advanced materials and armaments and autonomous systems.
Strong Industry & Defence Linkages: The program uses current operational knowledge and advanced research findings to prepare officers for their roles in modernization initiatives.
Research & Development
The partnership’s research agenda includes:
- Next-Generation Armoured Fighting Vehicle (AFV) Technologies
- Advanced Armament Solutions
- New Materials & Technologies for Military Platforms
- Joint R&D Initiatives in Defence Systems and Innovation
Strategic Impact on National Security
This collaborative programme has been widely hailed as a paradigm shift in how India approaches defence technology education and research. According to Prof. Rajeev Ahuja, Director of IIT Ropar, the initiative will cultivate defence technology leaders capable of steering innovation and indigenisation crucial to India’s vision of becoming a Viksit Bharat by 2047.
According to a statement issued by IIT Ropar, this is the first time any IIT in India has established such a comprehensive defence technology partnership with the armed forces. The initiative goes beyond conventional academic offerings, creating a robust ecosystem where cutting-edge research, applied innovation, and military operational expertise converge to strengthen India’s defence capabilities, it stated.
