Germany Submarine tech in India: Germany and India are close to signing a very big defense deal. Officials who know the talks say the deal will be worth at least $8 billion. They call it the “largest-ever defense agreement for New Delhi.” The talks started before German Chancellor Friedrich Merz plans to visit India next week. This deal will be special because Germany will share submarine making technology with India for the first time.
India wants stronger submarines because many of its current ones are old. The Indian navy uses around twelve Russian submarines that have aged over time. It also uses six newer submarines made by France. If the new Germany deal moves forward then India will drop its plan to buy three more French submarines. Germany and India Defence Ties
Germany’s Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems GmbH will partner with India’s state owned Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd. Together they will build the submarines in India. The officials who shared this information did not want their names used because the talks remain private. A spokesperson from Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems declined to comment. India’s Ministry of Defense and Ministry of External Affairs did not reply to questions.
Chancellor Merz will travel to the western Indian state of Gujarat. There he will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday. After that he will go to Bengaluru which many people call India’s technology hub. A German government spokesman said Merz wants to see German companies working there. This trip will be Merz’s first foreign visit with a large group of German business leaders. He also plans to visit China later though officials have not fixed a date yet.
Stronger Submarines
The new submarines will use “air-independent propulsion systems.” These systems help submarines stay underwater longer than normal diesel electric engines. This will help India guard the Indian Ocean where China has increased its presence. The submarines will give India better control over its sea areas.
The deal also shows closer defense ties between Germany and India. India has pushed foreign companies to make weapons inside the country and share technology. In 2020 the Modi government blocked many defense imports like fighter jets helicopters artillery and warships. India wanted companies to move factories to India instead.

Even after this India still buys many weapons from abroad. The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute says India is the second-largest importer of military equipment in the world. Russia remains its biggest supplier.
Germany’s defense industry grew fast after Russia invaded Ukraine. Germany now feels more open to sharing high level defense technology. Officials say this move also aims to reduce India’s heavy dependence on Russia.
