A proposal to initiate a Group (Term) Insurance Scheme for Casual Paid Labourers (CPLs) employed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), General Reserve Engineer Force for the ongoing project works was approved by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday.
The Defence Ministry asserts that this initiative will insure the next of kin for Rs 10 lakh in the event of a labourer’s demise during the course of the project.
“Keeping in view the severe risk posed to the lives of CPLs posted in hazardous work-sites, inclement weather, inhospitable terrain and occupational health hazards, and considering the deaths occurred, reported during their engagement,” according to the defence ministry.

Providing insurance coverage for humanitarian purposes is expected to significantly enhance the morale of the CPLs. As a social security and welfare measure, this program will benefit CPLs operating in isolated and remote regions of the country. It will significantly contribute to the prosperity of their families, the statement continued.
It may be recalled that the Defense Minister recently authorized a number of welfare measures for the advancement of the CPLs, according to the Ministry of Defence. These encompass the transportation and preservation of human remains as well as the attendant’s eligibility for a transport allowance. Funeral assistance is increased in value from Rs 1,000 to Rs 10,000. Rs 50,000 in advance payment in exchange for ex gratia compensation as immediate assistance in the event of demise, etc.
