Assam to Develop 6,000-Bigha Defence Park Near Nellie

The proposed Defence Park will cover around 6,000 bighas of land near Nellie. The cabinet has approved transferring the land to the Industries and Commerce Department for the project.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the main aim is to develop a defence equipment manufacturing industry in Assam. The park is expected to attract companies working in the defence sector and encourage new investments.

The project could also create employment opportunities and help Assam become part of India’s growing defence manufacturing industry.

The cabinet also decided to amend the Assam Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1964. Under the new rule, government employees found guilty of entering another marriage while their existing marriage is still valid can be dismissed from service. They can also be barred from future government employment.

CBI Inquiry Recommended Into July Floods

Another major decision was to seek a CBI investigation into the floods that hit Sivasagar and Charaideo districts in July 2026. The floods caused widespread damage and claimed more than 100 lives across the state.

Sarma said the state government would send a formal request to the Centre within the next 10 days. However, the final decision on whether the CBI will investigate the matter rests with the Centre and the agency.

The proposed investigation aims to find out what caused the disaster and identify the reasons behind the severe flooding.

Five Ropeway Projects and More Support for Farmers

The cabinet also approved a Ropeway Development Agreement between the Assam government and National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML). The agreement will help develop five proposed ropeway routes across the state.

The proposed joint authority will have a 51% share for the Centre and 49% for the Assam government. The projects are expected to improve transport facilities and make important tourist and religious places easier to reach.

Paddy farmers will also receive additional financial support. The government has approved an extra ₹200 per quintal, taking the announced procurement payment to ₹2,640 per quintal.
