The celebration of the 61st Raising Day included a demonstration of an SDRF rescue operation simulating an earthquake.

61st Raising Day of Civil Defence: Today, Meghalaya commemorated the 61st Raising Day of the Civil Defence and Home Guard at the Mawdiangdiang parade site of the department.

Speaking at the event, Comingone Ymbon, Minister of Civil Defence and Home Guards, stated that the two organisations have been crucial in helping out in several crises and anytime a natural or man-made disaster has struck.

According to Ymbon, the two organisations also assist the State Police and the civil administration in upholding law and order, performing VIP protection duties, and fulfilling the security needs of numerous ministries of the Central and State governments as well as public sector organisations.

The minister of civil defence and home guards claimed that by providing training to volunteer home guards and holding different training sessions on civil defence topics, such as disaster management, they are also benefiting society.

He claims that these organisations have taken on a new function in which they are accumulating knowledge and preparing volunteers in both urban and rural regions for any eventuality.

“In order to ensure that capacity building and awareness to meet any challenge become widespread, I would advise the department to take active help from various local bodies like the Dorbars, Nokmas, etc.,” Ymbon stated.

He emphasised the importance of the State Disaster Response Force, saying that it has played a key role in carrying out search and rescue efforts in the wake of natural disasters that have struck the State.

Despite a severe manpower shortage, the Director General of Civil Defence and Home Guards (DGCD&HG), I. Nongrang, stated that they are closely coordinating with the district and state administrative authorities to guarantee that rescue and relief efforts are initiated promptly and continue around-the-clock when needed.
