Ayatollah Ali Khamenei: Supreme Leader

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in a large joint airstrike by Israel and the United States. Iranian state media confirmed the news early Sunday. Reports said the 86-year-old leader died after his compound in Tehran was hit by an airstrike.
Khamenei was the highest authority in Iran. He controlled both the clerical leadership and the powerful Revolutionary Guard. These two groups form the main power structure of the Islamic Republic. After his death, officials formed an interim council to manage the country until a new supreme leader is chosen.
Mohammad Pakpour: IRGC Commander

Mohammad Pakpour was serving as the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps since June 2025. He was also killed in the recent US and Israeli airstrikes.
Pakpour became the top commander after Israel killed the previous IRGC head during the 12 day war in 2025. Israeli officials had described him as a key planner behind Iran’s military strategy against Israel. He managed missile deployments and helped coordinate support for Iranian backed militant groups across different regions.
He was also accused of leading the crackdown on anti government protests during last month’s unrest.
Ali Shamkhani: IDC Secretary

Ali Shamkhani was one of Iran’s most senior defense officials and a close adviser to the Supreme Leader. He served as secretary of Iran’s Defense Council from 2025.
Shamkhani played an important role in shaping Iran’s security decisions. He had earlier served as the chief of the IRGC Navy and also as army chief. For ten years he was secretary of the Supreme National Security Council. He was deeply involved in defence planning and national strategy.

Aziz Nasirzadeh: Defence Minister

Aziz Nasirzadeh, who was Iran’s defence minister under President Masoud Pezeshkian, also died in the strikes. He had a long military career. He fought in the Iran Iraq War and later held several senior roles.
Nasirzadeh served as deputy chief of staff of the armed forces and was commander of the Iranian Air Force from 2018 to 2021. He was known as a seasoned military officer with decades of service.
Sayyid Abdolrahim Mousavi: Chief of Staff, IAF

Sayyid Abdolrahim Mousavi was another senior military figure killed in the attacks. He spent many years in top army positions. He served as deputy commander in chief of the Iranian Army and later became chief of staff of the Ground Forces from 2017 to 2025.
Mousavi had been sanctioned by the United States, European Union, United Kingdom and Australia over allegations related to human rights abuses. These accusations were connected to the violent suppression of protests inside Iran.
