Autonomous mine hunting system: Thales, a European aerospace and defense company, has achieved a major milestone by delivering the world’s first fully autonomous mine-hunting system to the United Kingdom’s Royal Navy. This advanced system was developed under the Joint Armament Cooperation Organisation (OCCAR) and the Franco-British Maritime Mine Counter Measures (MMCM) program. The project aims to place both the UK and France at the forefront of naval innovation.

The new system uses cutting-edge technology, including cyber-secured drones equipped with Artificial Intelligence (AI), to improve mine countermeasure operations. It is designed to make these missions more precise and safer. According to Mirage News, Thales stated that the development of this system has supported 200 skilled jobs, helping to strengthen the British defense industry.

The Royal Navy will receive its first four systems this year. Each system includes several components that work together to carry out complex missions. These components are an Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV), an advanced towed sonar (TSAM) with a multivision sonar (SAMDIS), a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), and a lightweight operations center (e-POC). All of these are supported by a secure command and control system.

Maria Eagle, the UK’s Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry, said, “This delivery marks a significant milestone in our mine-hunting capabilities. The autonomous technology will keep Britain and our Royal Navy sailors safer by identifying and removing mines. It has also supported hundreds of skilled jobs across UK industry, a clear demonstration that defense is an engine for economic growth.”

Thales has also developed a sonar analysis application called Mi-Map. This application processes sonar data up to four times faster, allowing for precise detection and classification of seafloor mines. The system can be deployed from a mother ship or coastal bases and is designed to handle large amounts of data. This helps operators quickly identify and neutralize mines.
