Switzerland May Cancel U.S. Patriot Deal After Long Delivery Delay

Switzerland said it may cancel the U.S. Patriot order, is still freezing payments, and expects to decide on next steps by the end of June 2026.

Switzerland US Patriot Deal

Switzerland US Patriot Deal: Switzerland is now thinking about ending its plan to buy the Patriot air-defence system from the United States after big delivery delays. Defence Minister Martin Pfister said on Wednesday that the country has not closed the door on that step.

He said, “Cancellation is always an option in the event of a delay.” Switzerland is still hoping the deal can go ahead, but the government is also looking at other choices because it still has no clear answer on when the systems will arrive.

Earlier that same day, the Swiss defence ministry said it would keep stopping payments for the Patriot system for now. The ministry said this freeze will stay in place “until the United States has firmly announced new delivery dates and payment deadlines.” Switzerland ordered five Patriot systems in 2022.

The plan was for the first deliveries to start in 2026 and for the full order to be completed by 2028. But in July 2025, Switzerland said the US Department of Defense told it the delivery would be pushed back because Washington wanted to give more support to Ukraine.

Payments  Still Frozen

Switzerland already stopped these payments last autumn. Pfister made clear that the country has not fully given up on getting the system. He said, “We are still operating on the assumption that we will receive the delivery, but we don’t know when,” Pfister said, adding that the government was considering various options.

He also said, “A possible cancellation is one of them, but we don’t know the conditions,” he said. That means Swiss officials are still talking with the United States, but they do not yet know what a cancellation would cost or what rules would apply.

The problem got bigger after a new dispute over money. Last week, the Swiss government said the United States got around the Patriot payment freeze by using Swiss money from the same fund, even though that money was meant for Switzerland’s F-35A fighter jet purchase. Urs Loher, who leads the Swiss armaments department, said this move was authorised. Even so, Swiss officials warned that this kind of pressure on the fund could become serious if the money level drops too far.

What Happens Next?

In its statement on Wednesday, the Swiss defence ministry gave a warning about what could happen if the fund becomes too weak. It said, “if the fund’s liquidity falls below a critical threshold, projects may be suspended or even abandoned in the event of a further decline,” the Swiss defence ministry said in Wednesday’s statement.

The ministry also warned, “This could affect not only the acquisition of the Patriot system but also the entire Swiss portfolio within the framework of the (Foreign Military Sales) programme with the United States,” it warned. In simple words, this is not only about Patriot anymore. Other Swiss defence deals with the United States could also face trouble if the money situation gets worse.
