Finland US Defense Cooperation: 31 May, Helsinki (IANS) The Defense Cooperation Agreement (DCA) between Finland and the United States has been brought before parliament for approval by the Finnish government. Last December, the agreement was signed. The Finnish government said in a press release on Thursday that “the DCA will improve the conditions for the US to support Finland and strengthen Finland’s security as a member of NATO.”
As per Investing, parts of the DCA violate the Finnish constitution; hence, the government of Finland urged Parliament that a two-thirds majority be needed for final ratification, according to Xinhua news agency.

The parliamentary constitutional committee in Finland is the last arbiter of the necessary majority in the legislative process.
According to national radio Yle, Finnish Defense Minister Antti Hakkanen voiced optimism on Thursday that the DCA would be approved in a few weeks.
Laws about nuclear energy in Finland forbid the possession of nuclear weapons there.
Petteri Orpo, the prime minister, has promised that the DCA does not alter the current circumstances.
In mid-May, Orpo restated that Finland had no plans to start amending its nuclear energy regulations at this time.
