Drone Crash Near German Wunstorf Air Base: A drone found near the Wunstorf military air base in Lower Saxony, Germany, may have been carrying explosives. Investigators found a suspicious substance close to the wreckage during their search. Tests are still being done to find out exactly what the material is. German broadcaster NDR said investigators now believe the drone could have been fitted with an explosive device.
Drone Wreckage Found Near Wunstorf Air Base
The drone was discovered on September 14 near Lake Steinhude in Lower Saxony. The crash site is around one kilometre from Wunstorf Air Base. Police were called after the broken drone was found in an open and hard-to-search area. Officers later searched the nearby land for more pieces and other clues.

The identity of the drone’s operator is still not known. Authorities also haven’t established why the drone was flying in the area. Earlier reports said investigators were considering different possibilities, including a possible surveillance flight. The area around the crash site is largely uninhabited and officials previously said there was no known danger to the public.
Investigators Find Suspicious Substance
The case became more serious after investigators found suspicious material only a few metres from the drone wreckage. Reports by Süddeutsche Zeitung, NDR and WDR said the substance could be explosive.
Forensic experts are now testing the material. It hasn’t yet been publicly confirmed what the substance contains or whether it definitely came from the drone. Investigators are also checking whether the material and the wreckage are connected.
The German Federal Prosecutor’s Office and the Federal Criminal Police Office are involved in looking into possible links with another drone incident in Leipzig. The Federal Government had earlier said the Leipzig attack was linked to Russia, while Moscow has rejected that accusation.

Possible Link To Leipzig Drone Attack
The August 4 incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport involved a drone carrying explosives that was found close to a Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft. Investigators later found evidence suggesting that more than one drone had been involved. The main drone was disabled before an explosion could take place.
German investigators have since identified two suspects in the Leipzig case. German security authorities have also reported links between the operation and Russia’s military intelligence service, the GRU. Moscow denies involvement.
Wunstorf is an important German military transport base. The Bundeswehr’s Airbus A400M fleet is based there with the 62 Air Transport Wing. The German Air Force completed its planned fleet of 53 A400M aircraft at Wunstorf in April 2026.
