India Chief Defence Staff Gen NS Raja Subramani: On May 31, 2026, General NS Raja Subramani took over as India’s third Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and also became Secretary, Department of Military Affairs. He is the first officer in this role after General Anil Chauhan, whose term ended on May 30, 2026. The new CDS said he wants to keep building on the work done before him and help the armed forces work together in a better way.
At his first message after taking charge, he spoke about stronger teamwork across the services. He said the focus will be on more joint work, better planning, and faster use of Indian-made weapons and systems. He also spoke about the Whole-of-Nation approach and said the armed forces will work with all sides to make national security stronger.

What He Plans to Push Forward?
General Subramani’s key goals are simple to understand. He wants the Army, Navy, and Air Force to work with more unity. He also wants the military to move faster on reforms, theatre commands, and better use of Indian defence technology. In his view, the armed forces should be more joined up and more ready for future challenges. He also linked this to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s idea of ‘JAI: Jointness, Atmanirbharta, and Innovation’.
The biggest job in front of him is the long-discussed theatreisation plan. This means the three services would work under more integrated command setups during war or emergency. Many defence watchers believe this could make India stronger and quicker in future fights. His role will matter a lot because he has to help turn that idea into real action, not just paper plans.
Another major focus is indigenous defence tech. General Subramani has made it clear that Indian-made weapons and systems will stay high on the list. He wants their development, buying, and use inside the forces to move faster. The aim is to cut dependence on imports and give more support to self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
Who is he?
General Subramani is a highly experienced officer with more than 40 years of service. Before becoming CDS, he was Military Adviser at the National Security Council Secretariat from September 1, 2025. Before that, he served as Vice Chief of Army Staff from July 1, 2024 to July 31, 2025, and also led Central Command from March 2023 to June 2024. He was commissioned into the Garhwal Rifles in December 1985 and has held many command and staff jobs across different parts of the Army.

His education background also runs deep. He studied at the National Defence Academy and Indian Military Academy. He is also an alumnus of the Joint Services Command Staff College in Bracknell, the National Defence College in New Delhi, King’s College London, and Madras University. Defence sources also note his strong knowledge of the western and northern borders, which is a big plus for this job.
He has also won some of India’s top military honours. These include the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal. His appointment matters because India is pushing hard on military modernisation, border security, joint command work, and homegrown defence systems. That puts him in a key spot at a very important time.
