Territorial Army: As tensions between India and Pakistan rise, the Indian government has taken steps to strengthen the country’s military presence. On May 6, the Ministry of Defence announced that 14 out of 32 existing Territorial Army (TA) battalions will be deployed across key military zones. These zones include the Southern, Eastern, Western, Central, Northern, and South Western Commands, as well as the Andaman and Nicobar Command and the Army Training Command (ARTRAC). What is Territorial Army?

TA members are required to undergo two months of training each year. They are called to active duty when needed, and during such times, they receive the same pay and privileges as regular soldiers. Members of the Territorial Army can get promotions based on their service duration, and they can rise to the rank of lieutenant colonel or higher if they meet specific criteria.
The Role of the Territorial Army in India’s History
The Territorial Army has been an important part of India’s military since it was formed. Though it officially began in 1920, it has roots going back to 1857, during India’s First War of Independence. After India gained independence, the Territorial Army Act was passed in 1948, and the force was officially started in 1949 by C. Rajagopalachari, the first Indian governor-general.
The Territorial Army has played a significant role in many military operations, including the wars of 1962, 1965, and 1971. It also took part in Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka and helped with anti-insurgency work in places like Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, and the Northeast. Apart from military duties, the TA has assisted in disaster relief, helping during events like earthquakes and cyclones. Every year, October 9 is celebrated as Territorial Army Day to honor their efforts.

Territorial Army selection process
Candidates are selected through a written exam, followed by assessments from the Preliminary Interview Board (PIB) and the Service Selection Board (SSB). After being chosen, candidates receive military training at designated Army training centers.
How Can One Join the Territorial Army?
Joining the TA is a remarkable chance for civilians to contribute to national defence without giving up their primary careers. The basic eligibility criteria include-
- Nationality: Only citizens of India (male and female)
- Age Limits: 18 to 42 years as on the last day of filing of application i.e. should have attained minimum 18 years and should not be more than 42 years on 10 June 2025.
- Educational Qualifications: Graduate from any recognised university
- Physical Standards: A candidate must be physically and medically fit in all respects
- Employment: Gainfully employed (central government, state government, semi-government, Public Sector Undertaking, private sector, self-employed or own business)
Note: The serving members of the regular Army, Navy or Air Force, police, General Reserve Engineer Force, paramilitary or similar other forces are not eligible.
