The Indian Navy is set to induct five indigenously built naval platforms in June, including stealth frigates and anti-submarine vessels, giving a major boost to maritime security and defence self-reliance.

Indian Navy Warship Expansion: June is turning into an important month for India’s sea power. The Indian Navy is bringing in five indigenous naval platforms, and all of them are made in India. The move is being linked with “Atmanirbhar Bharat” and “Make in India”, since it gives more work to Indian shipyards and cuts down the need for outside suppliers. The Navy has already been adding new home-made warships and craft in 2026, including Dunagiri, Sanshodhak, Agray, Malvan, and Mahendragiri, through Indian shipyards and delivery milestones that took place between March and May 2026.

Indian Shipyards Lead the Work

The biggest part of this change comes from India’s own shipyards. Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers, also called GRSE, has delivered Dunagiri, Sanshodhak, and Agray. Cochin Shipyard Limited, or CSL, has delivered Malvan. Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, or MDL, has delivered INS Mahendragiri.

  • On March 31, 2026, GRSE delivered Dunagiri, Sanshodhak, and Agray to the Navy.
  • On March 31, 2026, CSL was handed over Malvan.
  • On May 1, 2026, the Navy received INS Mahendragiri from MDL.

What Each New Platform Does

Dunagiri

Dunagiri is a Project 17A stealth frigate which is built for front-line combat work and comes with modern sensors, weapons and network-based warfare features. It gives the Navy more strength in surface warfare and can help in hard combat jobs at sea.

Sanshodhak

Sanshodhak is a Survey Vessel Large. Its main work is to study the sea floor, carry out hydrographic surveys, and help with seabed mapping. It is useful for underwater research, safe sea planning, and better maritime awareness.

Agray

Agray is an Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft. It is made to find, track, and fight enemy submarines in shallow coastal water.

Malvan

Malvan has the same basic role and adds more strength to India’s coastal defence and anti-submarine cover.

INS Mahendragiri

INS Mahendragiri is another Project 17A stealth frigate from MDL. It is part of the Navy’s next generation of warships and is built to improve combat reach, speed, stealth, and mission flexibility in difficult maritime situations.
