India Submarine Manufacturing Hub: The world leader in conventional submarine technologies, Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), CEO Oliver Burkhard, is positioning India as a possible submarine manufacturing powerhouse in the Asia Pacific area.

Regarding the growing demand for submarines in America, Europe, and South Asia, as well as India, Burkhard underlined the strategic alliance between TKMS and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd. (MDL).

The focus of this partnership is a joint bid for Project-75I, the Indian Navy’s ambitious project to build six cutting-edge submarines with substantial domestic value addition. It is projected that the project will cost more than Rs 45,000 crore, or roughly USD 5.4 billion.

Burkhard sees India adopting a strategy akin to TKMS’s prosperous attempt in South America, wherein the country functions as a submarine technology manufacturing hub, serving the larger Asia Pacific region.

This occurred during TKMS’s reorganization within the Thyssenkrupp Group, where the parent company is emphasizing environmentally friendly technologies for steel production, such as hydrogen. As per Economic Times, Burkhard underlined the significant financial outlay required to decarbonize the steel sector, stressing a $1 billion cost to transform one million metric tons of steel capacity into production generating no carbon dioxide.

Under the Arihant class, ongoing projects including the construction of nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines underline India’s emphasis on indigenous submarine development; under Project-75, advanced conventional submarines underline this as well.

The result of the TKMS-MDL cooperation on Project-75I will significantly impact India’s future as a submarine production base. Should this project be successful, India could be able to become a significant submarine supplier to other countries in the area, transforming the defense scene around the world.
