Indian Army Agniveer tragically loses life to gunshot in Srinagar

An Indian Army Agniveer, hailing from Alwar, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, tragically lost his life to a gunshot in Srinagar, marking the fourth such incident in service.

Indian Army Agniveer death: “Self-inflicted gunshot injury” claimed the life of a recently inducted Agniveer in the Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, the Army announced on Saturday. The Agniveer, 19-year-old Amritpal Singh, passed away on October 11 while serving as a sentry.

As to Indian Army sources, he passed away from bullet wound. “He is died of gunshot. It could be an accidental firing, suicide or fratricide.” the source said

“An investigation in the case has been instituted,” a second source said.

As per Newsable reports, from the Alwar area of Rajasthan, Jitendra Singh Tanwar is an agniveer and paratrooper who enlisted in the Indian Army in 2022. He sadly passed away while on duty, which raises the number of Agniveers who have given their lives in this way.

The dead Agniveer’s family said he was a part of the current operation in Poonch, Jammu & Kashmir. But inside the force, sources have denied this assertion, saying he was not involved in the operation.

December of the same year saw the first batch of the Agnipath Scheme join the Indian Army after it was introduced in June of the same year. This program enables young people to join the military for a set four-year tenure between the ages of 17 and 21. 25% of the participants will get the chance to move into permanent positions within the force after their time is up.

Agniveer Amritpal Singh sadly committed suicide in Poonch on October 11, 2023, which led to criticism over the absence of a guard of honour for his funeral. Quick to denounce this choice, opposition voices sparked a furious discussion. According to an Army statement, Singh died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, hence no guard of honour or military funeral was held in line with current protocol.

Agniveer Akshay Lakshman died while on duty in Siachen a few days later on October 22 of last year. He received all the perks to which he was entitled as well as military honour.

While patrolling in Jammu & Kashmir’s Naushera area in January of this year, Agniveer Ajay Singh was murdered in a land mine explosion.
